The Story of our Logo

The ABRO logo is a rendering of a photograph taken in Belarus in the early 1990s by Bill Bangham. It symbolizes of our purpose of helping children exposed to radiation from the Chernobyl accident and their families.

Notice there are no hard lines. The figures are blurred and indefinite, yet indelible, as they walk toward an uncertain future. But…they walk together.

The effect of the Chernobyl accident on the Belarussian people and their children is also uncertain. There are some things we do know—and each year we know more—but most we will learn in hindsight with the passage of years. It is our commitment to walk alongside, offering a helping hand…and hope.

The photograph the logo is rendered from is of a father and son in a dimly lit hallway of a hospital where children are still treated for diseases resulting from exposure to radiation from the Chernobyl nuclear accident. At the time it was taken, the child was being treated for leukemia. He was very sick. At one point it was uncertain whether or not he would survive.

He participated in our summer program until he aged out and has grown into a healthy young man.
