Help the Walls Mathis Family Host Sasha & Bogdan: Donate Now!
We’re welcoming some new people into our lives this year!
In a Belarusian village lives a family of eight: Vitaly (dad and farmer), Yuliya (mom and homemaker), and children: Sasha (15), Bogdan (7), Matvey (5), Varvara (4), Angelina (2), and Nastya (6 months).
Our family plans to host the two oldest children, Sasha and Bogdan, through the American Belarusian Relief Organization (ABRO). ABRO coordinates summer visits to the US for Belarusian children who live in radiation-contaminated areas. During their six week stay, we care for them like our own children, see that they get dental, eye, and medical care as needed, and offer Bible teaching. Ministry leaders and parents in Belarus tell us that they see significant positive changes in the children when they return—physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
Sasha is 15 and in the 9th grade. She studies English and hopes to practice here. She has some deafness in one ear and uses a hearing aid. She and her family are Orthodox Christians, but she says they do not go to church very often because it is far away. She dreams of visiting America, finding friends, and seeing the ocean.
Bogdan turned seven in February and is in the first grade. According to his mother, he is a cheerful, friendly, sociable, hardworking and very affectionate boy. He loves his brother and sisters very much and enjoys playing with younger children. He dreams of seeing a plane, swimming in the sea, and meeting other children.
Our family—in terms of who will be home full time this summer—is a lot smaller than when we first hosted in 2009. This summer it will be just Stephen, Beth, and Aimee with visits from the older children. That’s one reason we are hosting two children this year. Does it feel a little crazy? Yes, it does. But we have found that our idea of crazy and God’s idea of good often overlap. So, we’re taking a deep breath and jumping in.
If this mission– to be part of restoration and growth– lines up with your desires as well, please consider joining our work! (HOST FAMILIES NEEDED—apply before APRIL 1!) We need prayer and funding, and we absolutely welcome practical help as well—(playdates??).
- that Mom, Yuliya, has someone nearby who can fill the gap while these two are gone!
- that we all get along well and enjoy getting to know each other.
- that we have a safe, happy summer
- that the children see their dreams come true
- and understand that it is God who orchestrated all that.
If you wish to donate to this work, we need about $3000 very soon…
